Yengwe primary school

When we arrived in 1998, Yengwe had two small buildings and catered to 50-60 students. Today, it has 1,600 pupils and 24 large classrooms, all funded by DAFA. The school is located just half a mile from St. Dominic’s Missionary Hospital, and thanks to our contribution, not only do the pupils have the opportunity to obtain an education but they are also provided with lunch every day.

In 2022 we expanded our feeding programme at Yengwe. This means that we now feed lunch to all 1,600 pupils five days a week for the full school year. For many of these students, this may be their only guaranteed meal of the day, despite walking up to 8km to get to their classes. With research showing that hunger can impact a student’s ability to learn, we are very proud of this project which supports some of Zambia’s neediest children to continue their education.

This summer, we’ve been busy loading containers with more equipment donated by Suffolk schools, via Walvis Bay in Nambia. Today, in schools all over Zambia, young people are using equipment previously used by young pupils in Suffolk – it is an uplifting thought. This year we’re building more teacher accommodation at Yengwe which will be completed in December 2023. And if DAFA provides the buildings, the government has promised it will provide the teachers to ensure the next generation are educated.
