Where do your donations go?

Two days of incredibly generous donations this September saw DAFA raise a magnificent €70,000 to support our projects in Zambia

These funds are a crucial part of our work in Zambia and support a variety of educational and medical projects already underway. Every penny of every donation goes directly to Africa, without anything being taken off the top, which means we can offer everything from the construction of new hospitals or hospital wards to new schools, teachers’ accommodation, feeding programmes for the poorest children, and the equipment needed to make these facilities run as they should.

A recent trip to Zambia in July 2022 identified a number of projects in need of further assistance. Our flagship project, St Luke’s Hospital in Chipata, is due to open in a few weeks. However, as yet, it only has basic equipment. Along with an x-ray machine, lab machinery and a computer system, it needs theatre lights, laundry equipment, oxygen concentrators, an ultrasound machine, mortuary fridges and basics such as sheets, pillows and blankets.

At St Theresa’s Hospital a digital x-ray machine is desperately needed as is a four-probe ultrasound  machine, the triage room is too small with no nearby toilet block and so construction work to improve this is a vital next step.

St Edmund’s School needs more accommodation for teachers in order to cater to the number of children who wish to attend as it is in a remote area. Equipment is needed for the science  and home economics rooms, and the school would also like to be able to provide bikes for those children who are currently walking up to five miles to school each day.

At Yengwe Primary School, staff are very keen to expand the daily feeding programme because of increased update. For many children this is their only guaranteed meal each day and vital if they are to not only continue their studies but remain healthy.

As you can see, there is a huge need for us to continue our work in Zambia. With your generous donations we have already achieved so much, but as always, there is still much more to do. We will assess the money now available to us and where it can be best spent. We always aim to provide the best value possible prioritising our spending where it will be of most use. Sincere thanks to all our supporters, sponsors and friends for their generous assistance in continuing Barney’s work and helping those most in need.
